The area from Kiyosumi to Kiba used to be the heart of timber business since 1629 to 1974, and there were many canals to carry logs and timber basins. At the Tokyo bay, the lumber merchants used to tie the logs to make a long raft to transport itself through canals. During the transportation, the rippling waves caused by boats, wind or any others would engrave the invisible traces on the logs surface. Here is metropolitan Tokyo, but the life there was strongly connected to natural environment. People in this area from young to old generations say ‘it’ s a town with gradually changing’, which means many things moved into and out in this area, but the speed is very gradual. I think the gradual change is probably coming from the history and old life here, and it might have been the invisible inner speed of this area. I made the layer of Edo(17’ s), Meiji(19’ s) Showa22(1947), Showa38(1963) and the present maps, and chosen almost 170points, then I recorded the environmental sound at the each point. Then, I created the water basin with the vibration speaker to shake the water surface operated by the sound, and printed the watermark using 5 different color that indicate 5 different era on timbers like a marbling method. Then I created one big flow reminds from the past to present with raft shape.
